My 89 Camaro with multi-miles on it will turn
the engine over, but not run. After sitting
quite a while it starts. I do not get any
spark nor does it look like it is pumping gass. I change the coil, but this did not help. When it runs, it runs great. I checked the distributor to coil wire. Any
thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Can you hear the fuel pump? Sounds like the classic bad ignition module. Test it and the pick up coil.

The car has some sort of "TBI" fuel flow system, and the fuel pump is in the gas tank.
I replaced it not too long ago and when the
car starts the fuel pumps fine. I also
tried pouring gas into the carb, and that did not help, so I check the spark and saw I was not getting any spark out of the distributor cap. I am a points and condensor
sort of guy, so any help with electronic ignition is appreciated. Would the ignition module or pick up coil prevent gas from flowing through the TBI? Is there an easy way to test these parts? Any info. on where they are and what they look like would help.

After reading other posts, maybe it's TPI
not TBI? Also, this all started after my
wife filled up with gas on a VERY rainy day.

The tow truck person mentioned to check for water in the gas tank. With electronic ignition and fuel feeds, is it possible that gas in the tank would cause you
not to get spark out of the distributor/whatever cap? Sounds like a dumb question from a points and condensor person, but I just had to ask.

My 89 iroc has had that problem twice since I have had the car both times it was the distributer. After it sit for awhile you could crank it all day long and it wouldn't start. Come back the next day and it starts right up. If it doesn't start at a bad time try beatting the sh*t out of the distributer. It worked for me

The injectors only inject,if you have a pulse from the dist.It sounds like you have a tbi(looks like a carb) If theres no spark,and no fuel spraying out of the 2 injectors,I'd try an ign. module.Check spark at the coil.

Sorry I forgot,no,bad gas cannot affect the ign. system.The ign. module is under the dist. cap,has 2 connectors on the outside. The pickup is there also,it has 2 wires going to the module.They can be hard to test,you might try a parts store, some have a module tester. The pickup can be tested with an ohm meter,you have to disassemble the dist. to replace it.

Thanks for all your help. I changed the ignitiion module and it appears to have fixed the problem. Cost $35. I thought the cost would have been a lot higher, thats why I asked if tests could be run.
