I have a question for you electrical guys out there. I installed a brand new Accel super stock coil in my 69Z and within 15 miles it burned out. What could have caused this??? I have a Accel Duel point distributer,with a ballast resistor.I put the stock coil back on,and it runs perfect. When I took off the brand new Accel, It was too hot to touch.

Is that the correct coil for the dual points? Twice as much work would need twice as much insulation between windings. Then it might of been hooked up for constant on and not an ignition on and was heating up way before it got on the road. I'm not sure if dual points do a double spark for cylinders but if they do your getting twice the amount of current thru the coil needing the manufacturers suggested coil. The most common problem in this new era is faulty production like windings in coils etc.

Is the coil mounted in the vertical position? If not, the windings may not be covered in cooling oil. The accel coils have a higher winding ratio than stock for a hotter spark, so they will get a tad warmer, but should be able to handle it. At first I thought you were running without a ballast resistor. Is your wire from the starter hot all the time as opposed to crank only?

My coil is mounted in the horizontal postion,and the wire to my starter is hot on crank only. If I mount the coil in a vertical position,could this solve my problem??

Yes. It will make sure the windings are submerged.
