: Convertable roll bar ideas?

Well, now its time to address putting a roll bar in my 69, what I'm looking for is something that is as non intrususive as possible, everything I look at is just that obtrusive, I like the setup Shelby used back in the day on his GT350 verts, but no one makes anything close to that, INOVATORS with a few mods would be ideal. Any other ideas?

I have seen a few caged Verts at Pacific Raceways...none impressed me enough to get a name

I had this installed locally based on an S&W kit.

Several years ago I talked with the fine folks at Auto Power about a 4 point roll bar for my vert. Here is what I learned. They had built a couple custom bars but were never quite happy with the finished fit so they don't offer them as a production piece. The issues are fitting under the top when up is a challenge along with making the rear seat almost impossible to get into. The Mustangs had a slightly taller top and a bit more space between the front and rear seats which is why roll bars work in them.

That said, you could easily have one fabricated if you can find a good shop and someone willing to do the work.

You might contact Year One and see how they did it. This is one of the few I've seen that looks decent on a convert, though I doubt it would offer any real protection. http://www.yearone.com/enthusiast/articles/69camaro/69camarocap21.html

That Year One bar does look nice and clean. Hard to tell in the pics but almost looks like they widened the inner rear panels to incorporate the bar.

I have always likes INOV8RS setup, iirc they don't offer it though, for liability reasons.

If the purpose is protection, then you are going to have to go with a setup like the drag car. The A pillars will fold if your car flips - a two or four point roll bar will not do you much good.

The Year One is a light bar, nothing more - nothing less.
I'm in the design/build mode now for a functioning roll bar. The roll bar will also afford me the use of a 3 pt seat belt.
Quite honestly, if I'm in such a violent crash that will cause my car to go bottoms up, the roll bar, A arms, steering wheel, etc are the least of my worries.....

The nicest looking one I have seen is by Frank at Prodigy Customs.
He has done several F-Body cars with this bar, but I don't think he sells it outright. You would have to send your car to his shop.

Now that is a sweet setup, like what I'm thinking, I know theres not allot thats going to help short of a full cage, but I'm also looking for more stiffening also.

I see they took the folding top off, because there is no way the top will close over that bar, too high!

I know it looks to high to put the top up, but it isn't.

I don't know if this helps but when I fab'ed up my own cage this is how I did it. It is cheap way to make it the way you want it to fit.

Looks just like the Mercedes Benz '90-01 SL roll bar.

They just need to make it retractable (pops up automatically with any sudden .5G event) and leather covered. And include a windscreen too.

If you want to stiffen it, then install the Hotchkiss subframe connectors.

I actually think that some of the rollbars look neat - sort of like a 60s Shelby Mustang.

But, if the purpose of a rollbar is to provide protection during a rollover, then you are looking at a 6 point bar because the A pillars are just not designed to withstand a rollover.

The purpose of these rollbar hoops are not to enhance safety in the event of a violent crash/rollover. We are all on the same page on that front. Thanks.

that is a nice setup but if you are looking to stiffen the car up i have a 67 convertible with a 496 with procharger about 750 hp conservatively and i used the dse sub frame connectors they weld in and you have to cut and weld the floor pans around them it stiffened up my car incredibly. I don't go to the track(they would not let me anyway) with sticky tires but I do run nitto drag radials. I have a 6 speed standard although 1rst gear is useless when I hook up in 2cnd I dont get any flex The car has been like this for a few years and the doors close like new. Be warned though i had the car s rocker panels replaced because it used to flex I had no idea they were gone but once on a lift I noticed a pinhole in the rocker and stabbed around and the rocker is made by sandwiching steel together the center steel plate rotted away inside where the damage was not visible but the car started flexing to where I could feel it it was scary but not anymore! Now it's just scary fast. Hope this helps I personally am not in love with a roll bar I just enjoy a cruise and a quick blast now and then.

I'm running Hotchkis now, thinking of going to DSE though.

When I get it back on the hoiset, I will very carefully inspect them, thanks
