View Full Version : It's a mystery to me!
69SSBIGBLOCK Aug 28th, 01, 01:02 PM I am having a problem unlike any I've had before, but surely someone will have a clue as to what could cause it. When I start my car the engine immediately dies when I release the ignition switch. Every time it's the same. It doesn't sputter, try to keep running or any such thing. It instantly stops running. I've replaced the solenoid. I switched coils and nothing is obvious to me. I recently had an alternator short out and burn up the positve battery cable and the wiring to the voltage regulator. I converted to a single wire alternator and have since driven the car, but could it have damaged something that I'm overlooking? I'm convinced it's electrical, but I could certainly be mistaken. Any help would be much appreciated. Super Chevy Show is in Columbus in a couple of weeks and I want to be ready.
DjD Aug 28th, 01, 01:08 PM Are you saying that if you keep the starter spinning it runs? If so it sounds like your resister wire is gone (when you burnt the others?) and the only power to the coil is comming from the starter...

Joekool1234567 Aug 28th, 01, 02:02 PM The voltage regulator runs a wire to the ing. If that wire is shorted it will not let the car fire in run but will in start. I would follow the wire to see if it burned anywhere else.
DjD Aug 28th, 01, 02:13 PM He doesn't have a voltage regulator.
novaderrik Aug 29th, 01, 12:14 AM ignition fuse? is there such a thing? bad switch...or wire could have fallen off the coil.

SEK Z28 Aug 29th, 01, 03:01 AM I would check the ballast resistor for the distibutor, if it still retains one. I had a very similiar problem with my car and found the ballast wire to be shorted out.
HOTROD69CAMARO Aug 29th, 01, 04:40 AM Sounds like its getting power correctly when you turn the key to start, but when you release it its not getting any juice when the key is in the run position.

Black 67 Aug 29th, 01, 05:11 AM Could it be a faulty igintion switch?
Everett#2390 Aug 29th, 01, 07:07 AM Can't be an ignition switch, too obvious.
Just think how many times the ig switch been worked in the past 32 years, Black 67, you're using too much common sense. LOL
However, I did have the same thing similiar happened to mine, removed the switch, carefully tore it apart, cleaned the contacts with emery paper, reassembled switch, and works great!
I put some dielectric grease on the contacts so as to protect and lubricate them while it was apart.

djunod Aug 29th, 01, 07:09 AM I had exactly the same problem after I had completely replaced both engine wiring harnesses in my '68. It was driving me nuts trying to figure out the problem, until I read the trouble-shooting section of one of my books.
It described exactly what was happening & and one of the causes was faulty wiring connection to the coil.
I had crimp spliced in a wire to the firewall mounted Accel coil (original coil position is on the intake manifold). So I soldered the crimp splice. Voila! It is now perfect.
So, make sure all your connections to the coil are well made. Any variation in voltage will cause problems. If you are using plastic covered splices, then remove the plastic cover with a razor blade and solder the wires into the crimp---then cover with electrical tape.

Black 67 Aug 29th, 01, 09:45 AM Maybe I should go back to bed... I can't think straight... Who am I, to blame all my problems on an innocent ignition switch... Dam there I go thinking again... Sometimes I wish I had a built in Iginition Switch to shut myself up...
Black 67 Aug 29th, 01, 05:45 PM 69SSBIGBLOCK:
You have any luck with that yet?
69SSBIGBLOCK Sep 1st, 01, 07:59 AM Thanks for the reply posts. My problem was in fact a broken resistor wire.
Glad to here you resolved it... http://www.camaros.net/forum/wink.gif
