Not sure if this question has been asked before? Looked in archives and couldn't find it.

Was wondering which to ask Santa for this Christmas...a PS3 player or a regular Blue Ray player?

I think the ps3 has the ability to upscale/up convert a regular DVD, and unclear as well in the ability to play BR DVD's. The plus in getting the PS3 would be the game feature, but was wondering how it would compare?

So, if you have had a chance to experience the PS3, would you share with me your findings on this machine?

Thanks,

capt

I purchased the Blue ray player. however if i were to do it all again i would get the PS3. You get the Blue ray capability and an entertainment console for family or visitors. The bonus for game players in the family is that you do not have to keep upgrading it like you do a PC to play the new games that come out! The otherside is that all things are on an equal playing field when it comes to gaming as everyone has the same setup and no unfair advantages. Downside is that not every game is available for PS3.

Than revisiting the blue ray function it is no better or no worse than any stand alone Blue Ray player! So there is no downside just a few $$ more for the added gaming and entertainment value which you can not purchase for the extra $$ that you would spend.

The quality of the PS3 is great and will last one a long time. I purchased the xbox for the kids gaming simply because at that time it was the console to get and avoid upgrading the PC's every two to three years to keep up with the new games! (This is not something you have to do with console game machines! The savings on new PC purchases have saved me easily $2000.00 Plus.

Just my 2 cents.

PS3 is a win... win for all.

PS3 by far! I explained to the wife years ago why, gaming and blu ray, and she was onboard. The blu ray experience, especially with the animated movies, is by far the best. Friends come over with their kids for a party and we throw a movie in for the kids and the parents end up watching because of the detail that comes out. They're amazed at the picture! We have no regrets spending the extra dough for the PS3. She even plays a lil' gaming with me! And a plus to all of this is the PS3 is much cheaper now than when we purchased it.

Thanks guys for the input...half the equation points to getting the PS3, but no one has addressed the capability to upgrade/upscale existing older DVD discs. Can this Sony player do a number on improving the info on reg movie discs?

Thanks to date for sharing the ability of this machine to play great Blue Rays, eh?

Yes, it upconverts. All of them do but you'd have to look at specific reviews to see which one does the best job. A regular DVD starts with 480 lines of resolution and the upconversion essentially just delineates it, takes what's already there and adds fluff to it based on existing info, and spits out 1080 lines. I should add that I don't have one but have looked at them. Just can't seem to bring myself to get one when I don't play games and watch a DVD maybe once every couple months....and it's totally not like me to not spend the money on something I'll hardly use if at all.

The PS3 will play regular dvd disk as will any Blue Ray player! The Blue ray is simply a format that is read by the player. In terms of improving regular DVD disks the answer is No! It simply plays the disk and information that is on the disk. You would be purchasing the machine to simply play the Blue Ray format on the blue ray disk that regular DVD players do not do obviously!

1080 dpi plays into it if you have a TV that is capable of Hd , high definition. Do you need a 1080 dpi tv to use this certainly not! However down the road you may as it is becoming the standard and are reasonably priced now.

There is no downside here, it boils down to whether you are prepared to spend the extra few dollars for the added benefit of having a gaming console available to you which someone in the family will take advantage of? If you decide later to purchase a gaming console you will ne paying the full Pop for another machine that is also capable of playing Blue Ray which you will not need as you will have a blue ray player already!:)

If you have no interest in gaming or providing it for friends or relatives than save the money and buy a regular Blue Ray player for yourself as there will be no difference in quality between the two machines in terms of watching Blue Ray disks.

If the price difference between the two machines is 100.-125.00 i would say that it is worth considering the PS3 if others will benefit from the gaming aspect and additional entertainment it provides the end user! If not save your money and don't give it a second thought!:)

Exactly!

They say the Blu Ray players make DVDs better for watching... but really who's going to see it? I didn't. But it doesn't bother me.

PS3 for sure. I love mine. I have a 47 inch 3d TV and it lets me play 3d movies and games as well as normal CD's DVD's and it just plain kicks butt.
