Has anyone adapted a newer, auto dim/home link, style rear view mirror to their 1st gen vert rear view mirror mount ?? Did a search and didn't find anything.

Sure
Lots of guys have updated theirs.

It's been discussed on here before - http://www.camaros.net/forums/showthread.php?t=172463&highlight=Mirror+Temperature

I have one of the 'new' "OnStar" retro mirrors in one car and talked with the installer about installing one in my 68 - he said it's 'not on the list - but he could probably make up a harness for it if I had a good schematic and some information' - may go for that yet.

I can see where it would be pretty easy for a coupe. But the vert has a different mounting system doesn't it?? I guess you could grind off the stock mounting arm from the vert mount so you can still attach the boot for the visors. Then use a normal glass mount. Run the wires through the moulding when I reattach it. Guess I need to look at it a little closer. Thanks for the link.

The main difference in the mirror mount brackets for vert vs. coupe is the base screw layout and the plastic/rubber boot for the visor.
They both mount the mirror the same, via a screw through the mirror back mount.

Neither of these bases would work with a modern mirror anyway, they need to have a glass mount for the mirror back mount system.
The glass adapter is available at any parts store as Dorman/HELP #76990 or on-line - Amazon.com: Dorman HELP! 76990 Rear View Mirror Bracket: Automotive

Next you'll need to select a mirror type you want.
GM used "Gentex" mirrors for many years.
The pre-late 90's GM trucks and vehicles used a mirror that only has a compass in it along with the 'Auto-Dim' feature.
The post 97/98 vehicles used a mirror with both the compass and the temp displayed in the same area. These mirrors lasted up until the early 2000's "On-Star" era mirrors came along.
Other makes of vehicles used Compass/Temp mirrors in lots of combinations - check out Honda's (same mount on some as GM), Mazda and others. The Mazda uses a japanese system, but a kit is also available to adapt to GM style glass mount.

There's a thread on "NastyZ" that covers a second gen install. It would be same with the exception of the modification to the OEM mirror mount to keep visor holder and the installation of the glass mount for the new mirror.

Those are my 'other thoughts' - well some of them - so far ;)

I just did mine on my 69vert I am working on. I bought it from Auto Toys for $169.00 shipped. It is made by Brandmotion and has compass and temp. I used original bracket just removed part of it so that I could utilize hole in header. I fished wires inside header down pillar, worked great.Temp probe mounts at front of radiator. Only other thing I bought was the GM type metal flat bracket and the epoxy to glue on windshield. Jeff

What I was thinking of doing to my mount was taking it to the chromer when I have my vent windows done. Have them grind off and polish the area when the stock mirror would go. Thne I could use it to cover the opening in header molding and hold up the visors. But would have a nice clean appearance. Then windshield mount the new mirror. RUn the wires under the header molding and down the A-pillar. I'll let ya know how it turns out.

Here are a few pictures of my finished mirror. I was able to utilize the existing bracket for the sun visors. Jeff

Ha, I was thinking if there is a way to replace my auto dimming mirror in my Impala with a manual one from a 69 Camaro! The rear connections are a pain to keep seated, so I have to jiggle them to get the mirror working again. .

Looks like you did something similar to what I was thinking of doing. Remove the mount portion but keep the rest.

I cut the metal bracket that attaches to the header in half so that I could utilize the ears that the plastic part of the sun visor bracket attaches to. Then pulled wire thru hole in header. Jeff
