: Header molding- New or Rechrome

I have header molding for my 67 vert and it has the chrome flaking away along the top other than that it could be cleaned up and used as is.

I was quoted $80 to $100 ea. to have them rechromed plus shipping. Seems high but they are orig.
Repros are half that. What is the best way to go here. The car is not a numbers matching anything just going to be a real nice totally rottiserie rebuild car, so not a show car.
I have heard that the repros don't fit.
Feedback please from someone with experience.
Thanks

The repros fit if you work them a bit. They are too tight at the opening of the C and need to be spread a bit. I'd be interested in your hold ones if you decide not to use them and they are in good enough shape to be rechromed.

I the $80-100 sound about right or do you guys know of a good but less expensive place to get them rechromed?

If I had it to do over again..I'd would have rechromed.

The repro was a b%&&$h to put on, and wasn't near the same gauge of thickness as the orig. IMO

another vote to re-chrome the originals.

I still have mine but they were full of holes. i tried 4 pair of repro's before getting a set that was close enough to make them fit. The other 3 sets would never have fit.

Re-chrome (worth whatever it costs). The repro profile is not even close.

Triple-plated chrome, the only way.

Thanks, I am starting to get a hint, just a little common thread running through your answers, that the repros might not fit!

Rechrome it is.

Eldon, let us know if it fits (first time out)...it will be a first in my book.

OK you have my attention.
Mine are orig. and fit perfect now. Will re-chroming them change them in some way? If it does why pay so much to have them done if you still have to beat them into place?

Definately rechrome it if you can. Not destroying it when you remove it is the real trick sometimes.

It was off when I got the car in Home Depot orange buckets!! I gage how the build is going by how many EMPTY orange buckets are sitting around.

I have put it on and it goes on great and fits great.

I was just wondering why cptncanuk was saying it would be a first. Seems like it would fit the same after re-chroming.

Different thicknesses in the chroming process. Tollerances were pretty tight with the original. A little thicker chrome and it probably won't fit. Just my .02 on the subject.

No, no, Mark! I was referring to the repro causing pain to fit it on.

Only have heard that the re-chromed may not be as pliable as before, but that's second hand info here.

Yes. Search "satin chrome" and you will find some info. One discussion here:
