here we go...
i just installed a brand new fuel pump, which went very smoothly. so i drove the car for a couple of miles, stopped, turned the car off for about half hour, started it back up, drove it for another couple of miles...
suddenly, the car stalled out. trying to restart the car does not work unless i put the accelerator to the floor. it then idles fine, but as soon as i put it in drive, it'll stall out again. then at times, it'll stall out even when in park, idling.
also, when the engine does run, there seems to be more emission smoke than before the fuel pump change. and when the engine stalls out, a puff of smoke comes out the carb.
could this be a carb problem, even though it wasn't touched in the process? is it possible that the carb would need readjustment after installing a new fuel pump? what else could it be?
one thing i did after installing the pump was add slick 50 fuel system treatment, could this be causing the problem?
thanks.
Do you have a fuel filter between the pump and the carb? sounds like you got a piece of trash into the carb. Could be teflon tape or a piece of hose!

i do have a fuel filter between pump and carb, one of those performance glass ones where you can see tha actual filter, and there's not even a little speck of dirt in it..
Since you have more smoke and the backfire, it seems like you may me getting too much fuel, like the needle and seat stuck open, like trash there. Or a closed choke. Maybe pop the hood and after shutting it off, quickly look to see if fuel is still going into the intake. maybe try looking down the throttle bores while its runnung to see if fuel is dribbling out of the carb. just dont lose your eyebrows if it stalls!

actually did almost loose my eyebrows! big flame came out one time when it stalled out. i gave up and brought it to the mechanic. he tells me i need a new carb, but i think its just because he doesn't know how to work with holleys. should i try to rebuild the carb? clean it all up? i've never taken apart a carb before and am kinda intimidated by the prospect, but i really don't trust these local mechanics who would rather just scrap it and throw in a new one. one guy went as far as to say take off the edelbrock manifold, and get a double barrel carb! jeez!
anyone know any reputable mechanics in brooklyn, NY who know how to work with holleys?

Rob,
Rebuilding a carb isnt to difficult with a rebuild kit it comes with directions. Usually costs under 15 bucks (from any auto store). But if you feel a little uncomfortable doing it yourself you could try to locate a good carb rebuilder he can suggest maybe better jets and needle etc for the type of driving you do, usually cost about $150 which is kind of steep when you can spend another 100 and buy a new one.
I would go with the rebuild first to see if it fix's your problem if it doesnt your only out the 15 bones.
The first time I did it wasnt to hard but there are allot of little peices so keep track of where stuff goes back to. They give you a diagram of a carb and where there go to assist.
Just a thought Sometimes when you backfire thru the carb it bends the flaps (the choke)in the carb, if these are damaged you might as well buy a new one. Ive had that happen once also.
Good Luck!!

Hopefully you have a fuel filter in the line. It is very easy to get a small piece of rubber hose or debris in the fuel line when changing pumps. If that get's into the carb it can cause the needle and seat to stay open and flood the engine.
I'd find someone competent to put a kit in it and you should watch them do it so you will learn how.
