I am not very knowledgeable about carbs. What would cause an engine to be "cold natured"? Meaning you have to pump the gas pedal a few times before it starts or is this very common with carb engines. Thanks for any info.

That could be normal if the car sits for extended periods of time.
Check your choke. With the air cleaner off does the butterfly plate up top completely close when the engine is cold? It should. Then when you start the car there should be a vacuum pull off to open this plate an 1/8" to 1/4" depending on specs.
