hey i have a 68 camaro new 454 and with the bb frame mounts i have more than enough room for the hei, so i installed it and broke engine in now i saw on another post something about the resistance wire and being used for the points. i bought a new engine and light harness for my car and i cut end off the coil + wires and put a solderless connector on to hook up the Hei, now is this the best way???? i crimped both the reg wire and the resistance wire together in the connector. i have a mini starter and am not using the yellow wire that fed the resistance wire with more juice(i cut it back and taped it. so i would like to know if what i did is correct and will work for a long time or does the hei need a bigger wire for power???? also i just taped up the ground wire for the coil as the hei does not need one, please fill me in, thanks so much for all the help
Jake

Using the resistor wire you're only getting about 9 volts to the HEI, it needs full battery voltage. Some people cut the resistor at the bulkhead for the fuse block and splice a wire from there to the HEI. I just ran a 14 gauge wire from the IGN terminal on the fuse block inside the car to the HEI. There's usually a rubber grommet somewhere on the firewall you can get the wire through.

1 2Run has the answer on the hot wire. You also talked about a ground. The HEI has a ground that goes through the 3 wire connector that goes from the dist to the cap. This is the middle wire, it will run fine for a while without it but it will burn the module out sooner or later. There is a metal tab inside the cap under the coil. This is a strap that goes under the coil on one of the screws that holds the coil down in the cap. This grounds inside the dist to the screw that holds the condenser down. All this must be hooked up or some day it's module time. Here's a good one, if you don't have a good body to engine ground this can mess up the bushings in the tranny.

If it's an 18 gauge wire in the new harness that connected to the - terminal of the the old coil it's the tach wire not a ground. Most of these cars had a braided ground strap that went from the firewall to the intake.
