My fuel pump went out on my 1991 Z28. It is an in tank pump and it is very time consuming to change. My question is, has any of you 3rd gen guys ever put an external pump on on of these cars? Did you remove the old pump? If so did you have any problems with the car running correctly?

I have done it. It is somewhat labor intensive, however doing it alone in my driveway all in all it was not that bad. Fortunately the tank was nearly empty so not a lot of weight. I simply followed the Service Manual and I had everything on hand ready to go back in. My car was an 86 Trans Am. This was my Wife's daily driver and she almost always was running on empty. The key here is never run the tank lower than 1/4. Since the pump is "Fuel" cooled you can figure out the rest. And "NO" there is no safe way to bypass this pump.

You need to remove the old pump even if you put an external on it. It's been discussed many times on thirdgen.org. Many hack an access panel in the floor. I don't recommend that. As langss said, it's not that bad to do it right.
