: Can I paint Camaro outside?
1996jeep Jan 25th, 12, 01:34 PM Don't have a paintbooth or big enough garage. Can I paint outside? I have 80 gal compressor and hvlp gun and summit paint single stage urethane. If dust gets in paint I can just color sand it out right?
Not recommended but will it work
Vintage 68 Jan 25th, 12, 01:57 PM Maybe - during the summer ... ;)
I often shoot parts and have shot some complete jobs in the driveway with good results.
I shoot early in the morning, before any wind starts, and most the bugs get up, to mess things up ...
Seems the later I shoot during the day the more '$hit' I find in the end ...
Yes, you 'can' sand some defects out of the top coat(s) - BUT ... it depends more on the type of finish and what the defect is!
If it's a small gnat or a tiny piece of dust then your chances of getting it down/out with some sanding are pretty good - if it's a Bee or ??? something you're hosed and will need to remove and repaint that area ...
Also depends on if it's in a base coat and can be (no pun intended) removed before the top/clear coats - I've removed a few small defects with an X-acto or tweezers and used a toothpick or Q-tip to dab a bit of paint over the area and then finished with top coat and you couldn't find the place after final sanding and buff.
I've also set-up a temp 'spray-booth' with a very large piece of 4~6m plastic sheeting over a temp framework to shoot a tractor and some other equipment.
Granted - I wasn't going for a concourse finish on some of these, but they came out well with just normal cautions and prep work.
Set up a test panel or some of the small parts and shoot a couple test shots and judge results - if it's 'good enough' for your needs then go for it
reelknots Jan 25th, 12, 02:40 PM You could spray the area with 'Yard Guard" before painting!l:)
1996jeep Jan 25th, 12, 02:59 PM Would I be better off with basecoat clearboat or single stage outside?
69Z28&SS396 Jan 25th, 12, 03:14 PM Also if you do shoot outside, wet the area you are shooting the car over. you dont realize how much dust you kick up when walking and moving an air line.. All these other ideas are ones ive used for every paintjob ive ever done..

Good one!
ZLP955 Jan 25th, 12, 04:05 PM Apart from the technical point of view (paint type, time of day, wind etc etc), you should check your local/state regulations on spray painting outside; some states don't permit it and all it takes is one call to the EPA and - bang - big fine......
(Don't ask me how I know :( )
ebd Jan 25th, 12, 04:54 PM I bought one of those white vinyl portable garages at Sams for $200 and then went to a appliance store and picked up some refrigerator boxes to make a floor. Put a fan in the front and some filters at the other end and sucked the air through. Worked perfect.
Would I be better off with basecoat clearboat or single stage outside?
Single stage
67 455 Bird ragtop Jan 25th, 12, 05:43 PM Single stage I would think BC/CC would be best for metallics. You can always sand and buff the clear if you get crap in it. Single stage for a solid color.
sflippen Jan 27th, 12, 09:42 AM Better off renting a booth than risking a bad paint job after investin a lot of time and money in the prep

I was just gonna suggest this, Steve...and wet down the floor. Way too many variables outside as already mentioned. I tried it once outside. Just once!

alanrw Jan 27th, 12, 10:00 AM I have always considered myself the God of Wind. Every time I go to paint something on a dead calm day, be it a rattle can or spray gun, the minute I get ready to shoot, the wind comes up. I have concluded I can summon the winds at will ( I think it has to do with masking tape).

I can beat that with my leaf blower....no matter which direction I blow the grass or whatever with the wind.....it changes direction and blows the stuff into my face!!

Hahahahah!! Classic. :D
Phx 69 camaro Jan 27th, 12, 10:50 PM I painted a truck tailgate in the driveway and as soon as I finished last coat of
clear this flying ant dove right into it, quickly I pulled him out and shot more clear
to fix it. No problem picked up the tailgate and walked into the garage and hit
the hanging fuzzy parking tennis ball, left the fuzz in the clear. Best to paint inside
and don't move anything till its dry. Bugs just love that smell of clear, good luck

Ha ha - my wife thinks I'm one too - even though I always tried to blame it on the dog :D
