We'll, I had hoped to use the flat hood but unless it bows up enough in the center I may have to change my plan. This has the factory zz427 intake and the recessed air filter base.

When you get that thing fired up, let me know how that motor runs, performance wise. I have my eye on it and would like a first hand report if it is worth the $$. Positive or negative feedback would be great.

I have seen a company that makes a Carb hat simmilar to what is used on a belt driven blower that brings the air filter to the front of the engine.

Spectre performance:

Either that picture is tricking my eyes, or it looks like your engine is sitting about 1-1.5" to the right of center.

The picture in the 1st post ? Big Blocks are offset 1/2", so the difference in the measurement to each fender would be 1".

I have a 68 with a 427 and vic jr. intake with correct big block frame mounts. It has a cowl hood with recessed air filter base and 2 1/2'' air filter and I only have about half inch clearance between filter and bottom of hood.

I was able to get the hood on and shut with no air cleaner.

I have a dropped base air filter assembly with a 3 in. tall filter but the hood hits it.
I think a 2.5in tall filter will work but it will be very close to the hood and
will probably hit while driving.

I have the aftermarket engine stands from Classic Industries.
3950113 left (drivers side) this is the taller mount.
3950114 right (pass. side)

Maybe a different drop base or a flatter top?

You erased the picture of the air cleaner, but yes, a thinner air filter, a flatter air cleaner top, or a deeper drop base would make it work.

Thanks again for your help. Every step seems to be a big project but it's getting there.

I can't seem to post more than one photo at a time in my posts. I have to delete my previous photo to post another.

Give Photobucket a try. You upload the pics into your account and then you past in the links to the thread and they appear.

I was able to get a little more clearance by adding a 2.5" tall filter element. My original one was 3 inches tall.

The hood shuts and there is a 1/2 inch of clearance between the hood and the uppermost portion of the chrome top.

I used a Purolator A60102 air filter. The filter dimensions are (13.91 OD. * 2.54 high)

It's got a white element and black base so it doesn't stand out.

That air cleaner lid has a lot of a dome to it. Mine is almost flat. You could probably gain a 1/2" or so getting a flatter lid.

Yes, I was hoping to get a flatter filter lid.

But now, with the shorter filter and the dropped base the float bowl vent tubes are just touching the filter lid.

I need to cut them down just a bit.

Not sure if they can be pulled out or if I can just trim a 1/4 inch off the top of them?
