My 69 was running nice and smooth on our nightly cruise, took daughter to her softball game on Thur. evening and back, it ran great. Friday went for a ride and it began to stumble as soon as I started it up. The idle dropped down to 600rpm in neutral, had to step that up so it would idle in gear. It seems to stumble only at idle now. At 50 mph I can hear faint pops at steady pedal too. Did I perhaps get some crud loosened up in the gas tank? Or Carb. dirt? or electrical? New plugs only 200 miles ago.
Where should I look first? How have others tackled the 'dont know where to look' question?

vacuum leak. happened on my Nova about a month ago- one night i was coming home from work at 3 am, and the thing would not idle at stop signs. had to feather the throttle a bit to keep her going- not fun with a stick shift. the next day, i was all ready to take the carb off just for kicks, when i noticed one of my "screw in vacuum hose" plugs was missing from the fitting behind the carb. put a pipe plug in the hole, as i have nothing going to it anymore, and it now runs better than it did all year.
now, if i could just afford to put rear tires on her so she could leave the garage. somehow, they got all bald and have wires sticking out...

Many possibilities and it won't be rocket science. Although a vacuum leak is certainly possible, a stuck float is also likely. Happened to me. Look down the carb throat and see if you can notice fuel dribbling down. That will determine/eliminate what is a common problem area. Let us know.

Possible dirt in needle and seat, start car then shutdown look down carb to see if gas is dribbling into throat.
