I have a 1987 IROC Z28 with 305 TPI w/ 5 speed. Mild mods include K&N filters, TPIS Airfoil, screen removed from MAS, Flowmaster cat-back, Accel cap, rotor and plugs, BlueMax wires, 160 degree thermo, dual electric fans with new relays and sensors. The engine will start and run fine until the temp get to a normal operating level. The engine then dies and will not start again until it has had time to cool. The engine doesn't seem to be overheating. Could this be a starter or coil problem or something totaly different. Any help will be appreciated.

I'd run it until it quits, then check for spark by putting an old spark plug into one of the wires, lay it on the engine with a good ground and crank it over.

I'd suspect a bad ign module, they can fail when they get warm. It might be a cracked connection inside the module, when it heats up the crack separates.

Thanks for the input David. I'll try that and let you know. If it turns out to be the problem then this will make the third module in two yrs.

I agree with Dave. The module is the best starting point. Sounds to be electronic in nature. I am not sure but you maybe able to read codes from the computer. As cars get more and more technology it becomes harder to find problems. If it is not the module and you can not read any codes start thinking of things heat would affect, other sensors (temperature [sometimes these are not only in the block but in the radiator/overflow tanks], TBI/injection, choke, amps/voltage sometmes can be the problem [alternator may work cold but when it heats up low/no amps/voltage]) lots of options. I do not think it would be a starter unless the wiring to the starter is somehow mesing things up.

If it is the module, check for bad plug wires which can cause arcing to the module inside the distributor cap which will blow the module.
Normally that would just blow the module, and it wouldn't start after that.
It might also be the pickup coil which has very small hair like wire in it that can break.
You test it with an ohm meter and it should be a specified resistance. I'd check it hot when the engine quits if there is no spark.

If you find another bad module,throw in a new coil.Check the coil for white spots next to the steel lamination.

lets not forget about the ecm[computer] i've seen alot of those cause seemingly hot no start conditions,if your spark search doesnt turn up any results,throw the ecm in the freezer for a couple of minutes and see if it starts.

David, I tried your idea and yes it was the module. It looks like the last time I had it in they decided to use a module from Hong Kong. I guess it wasn't up to the heat. I replaced it with an USA made performance module. Works fine now. Thanks for all of the suggestions everyone.

Make sure you used the heat sink liquid gel on the base for cooling.
