The engine is a 68 396, the question i have is that around all the spark plugs im getting this black soot up to the cap of the spark plug wire and around the spark plug hole. ive double checked to make sure that there supposed to be the right plugs but am not sure of whats going on, its like the plug is incorrect and im getting blow by?? any ides as to what this could be. thanks

oh it can happen with a set of old well used head's. the surfeces where, and warp alittle with age and use heating and cooling changing the plug's.

this is one of the most over looked part of the head's every one take's the plug hole's for granted.

try this, put a little antisieze on the plug thred's, Do not get any on the the tip!!!

antisieze can act like thred sealer, and it will prevent galling of the plug thred's, a severly galed plug thred will leak like this also.

if the antisieze work's i would think about pulling the head's and getting the fixed, if they can be, some tine in the future.

Make sure you have the correct plugs for your heads. Old style have the compression washer. New style has a taper that seals against the head surface. They are not interchangeable.
