Installing an electric fuel pump on the '69. I want to wire it so it only runs when the ignition is in the "run" position. What color wire do I need to tape into under the steering column?

An alternative to cutting the original wire harness and also a safety measure in the unfortunate case you are involved in an accident would be to wire it through a oil pressure switch. This may not work if you are not running the mechanical pump also, but the carb should hold enough fuel to fire the engine, till the electric pump can take over.

There should be a plug in the fuse box that says Ign. You should be able to crimp a spade onto your wire and just plug it in. Make sure you plug into the ign and not the Bat terminal. Get a light tester a double check. Don't cut into the harness. The circuit will also then be Fused. You might want to check and see how many amps the pump draws before you put a 30 amp pump through a 20 amp fuse.

I recommend using a switch in case you have to shut it off with your ignition on. I hate mine, too noisy. As soon as I get a chance I will be installing another mechanical pump. I have a holley with the pressure regulator. I will be going with a holley mechanical.

This month's Chevy High Performance has an article on this. They say to use a radio shack relay to control the pump, wire the + side of the relay coil to the ign. lug on the fuse box, and the - side to the oil pressure idiot light sensor on the engine.
