A friend of mine has an 88 IROC with the 700R4, and about a week or so ago he lost 4th gear, just would'nt shift into it anymore, but he needed to get to work so continued driving it for a week. Somebody suggested to him that he change the filter, and that might solve the problem, so he did, and suddenly it started working right again, he thought he had the problem licked, but about 30 miles later it lost 3rd and 4th, so now hes down to 1st and 2nd only, which both seem to work great, but who knows how long. Any suggestions what the cause might be?

Somewhere in there, pressure is being lost, not allowing the fluid to go where it needs to go. Or it could possibly be a stuck ball in the valve body that is restricting the fluid.

like you describe

I would suggest an overhaul if he plans to keep the car for any length of time including a refurbished stock convertor - never reinstall an old convertor if you can avoid it after a rebuild - its not worth the trouble !

Thanks for the replies guys, I appreciate the help. I guess we will have a look at it and see if we can find anything plugged up, I read in some other posts where people were having shifting probs that it could be the vacuum modulator or governor, so guess we will have a peek at those too. But I realize its a long shot that we will be able to find an easy fix for this. So I am thinking replacement may be the option since he cant afford to have the car down for a week or however long it will take a tranny shop to fix it. I'v also read that the turbo 350's are more durable than the 700R4's? Will a 350 bolt right up as a low hassle replacement? or does it take allot of modifications to get one to work?

Don't do the TH 350 IMO. Doing this, you will lose your overdrive, and your low first gear. The 700R's were meant for these cars, I can't ever see a reason to swap it out for an inferior tranny.

Might be a long shot, but check your detent/kickdown cable at the carb. I was trying to adjust mine a few weeks back and was having trouble, where it didn't want to shift up. If the cable has broken or the plastic adjusting unit has rotted away, could cause shifting problems.

He might also be having a problem with the pump...I Had a 1990 GM pickup that would do the same deal. Rebuild the wwas the only way to get it fixed and working correctly/ reliably.
