I'm getting ready to have my rear leafs rearched. What is the correct color to paint them? They are black right now but I've seen them cast gray also. What is right? Should I paint my front coils also before I put them on?

I honestly cant tell you what color the springs were stock. I ordered mine from Year One and they are black. Of course the springs probably come from the factory in both black paint and plain cast metal. This is GM remember.....

According to Jerry MacNeish' fact book the front and rear springs should be "natural finish".

Natural finish is a heat treated blackish look, not a cast gray etc. I have had these plated in black phos before also then used a oil type finish. Depends what you are trying to do. If its a driver than the cast will work just tone it with some flat black overspray. It will look close.

If your leaf springs need re-acrched you are more or less wasting your time. It is a temporary fix for a long term problem. You can get replacement springs from Detroit Eaton Spring. They were a vendor the GM for a long time.

I took my springs apart and blasted them. They are the originals but my car sat on jackstands for many years, so they were in very good shape.

After blasting them, try a High Heat Black Paint that you would use to paint a Charcoal Grill. It will give it the High Heat Tempered look. And that is about as close as you are going to get....
