I sent my numbers matching engine out to be rebuilt and they called me back to let me know that my engine is actually a 307 not a 327. The engine code states that it is a 327 2bl powerglide. The car has 327 fender emblems. Has this happened to anyone else?

It sounds like someone might have re-stamped the block. Check the date the block was manufactured, this is a number that is cast into the block in the rear just above where the transmission bolts to the block.

mark, just curious how do you know this is supposed to be the oringial engine-2-how well do you know this machine shop there is such a thing as switching engines.i mean everyone knows you would rather have a 327 than a 307.did you buy this car new.but then again crazier things have happened,#,s saying one thing and the car actually being something else.do you have more history infro on the car????

The VIN # on the block deck matches the car VIN. (That does not prove that it is the original engine, but everything else on the car seems to be.) The 2 digit engine code that says it should be a 327 2bl powerglide is correct with the exception that it is not a 327.

What does the 7(?) digit code on the drivers side rear say?? Is it a 327 # or a 307?? Are you sure your car didnt originaly come with a 307 and you do have the correct engine? The deck number doesnt really say much because they can easily be re stamped.

Mark,
How about posting the numbers so we can try and sort it out. Block casting number, and stamped number. I wonder how far apart the machine shop has your motor ?? If they have just looked at the crank, the large journal 327's and the 307's used the same cast crankshaft so that may be what they are looking at.
Let us know,
