I have a 1968 Camaro with a Turbo 350 transmission and a 3.08 rear end. The problem is that my speedometer reads about half off, or at least it did with a 39 tooth gear. My father and I figured that we need a 21 tooth or 22 tooth gear to make it close. A 21 does not exsist as far as we can tell, and a 22 is too small. Our car has the larger housing for the gear. The smallest we were told is a 34 tooth, or at least for our housing. I am wondering if there is any way to fit a 22 tooth in my transmission, like a kit to convert it to thye smaller housing. Any help would be m,ost appreciated.

I see that a 350 has gears with 20,21,22,23,24 & 26 teeth. A 400 has 34,35,36,37,38 & 39. Have you looked at the shape of your transmission pan to verify which transmission you actually have?

Rick's First Gen catalog has a table showing how to figure out exactly how many teeth you need. It's on page 86 of the current catalog.

Thanks for your help. It turns out that I have a transmission out of another car (not a Chevrolet, perhaps a Buick I forget now). But the tailshaft was incorrect for a chevrolet spedo gear, that's the only difference between the two makes. So we got a new tailshaft and everything seems to work quite well. It's odd seeing the speedometer read 60 instead of 30 on the hughway now, but I'm happy to say that it seems to work fine.

It might be necessary that you change the drive gear. There are two removeable gears in a TH350, the "drive" gear (on the output shaft) and the "driven" gear (also called the speedo gear).

To remove the drive gear, you'll have to remove the driveshaft and the tranny tailhousing. The gear is held in place by a depressable clip. Push it down and slide the gear off.

On my TH350, I had to do this to get the speedo to be accurate....
