View Full Version : PG Trans Stall
Barry H Aug 17th, 01, 08:18 AM Everyone,
I recently had my 350 rebuilt and re-installed with the PG trans. Before I rebuilt the engine I had installed a 2500 Hughes converter and it worked properly, flashing to around 2500. When I re-installed the combo, the car runs great, but I'mn no longer getting the 2500 stall speed, or flash. Its creating havoc with the idle, as in I have to set the idle around 1300-1400 RPM, then when it goes into gear it drops to around 700 RPM. A big drop, that a properly working converter would alleviate I'm guessing. The car runs excellent, good pickup and all, I just don't believe the stall is working. Could I have done something wrong in the install? I pushed the converter all the way in, turned it around several times, then had to pull it out slightly to engage to the flywheel. Any help would be appreciated.
Everett#2390 Aug 17th, 01, 08:26 AM Check vacuum modulator and/or vacuum line.
Engine sounds like a vacuum leak, will it idle@700 rpm comfortably in neutral?
Engines having vacuum leaks will not idle, especially under load, but will run fairly good at higher rpm's.

Barry H Aug 17th, 01, 09:43 AM Everett,
So, a vacuum leak or defective modulater will cause the stall not to flash? I guess I'm a little confused as to what actually causes the stall to operate. I believe I have read other posts on converters, but I don't remember vacuum playing a big part. Please explain if possible. I will check this out, I'm an engineer by trade and just want to understand why. Thanks for the quick response.
ZZ430DropTop67RS Aug 17th, 01, 10:09 AM Barry, that IS strange. It sounds like you did everything correctly...but what's changed?...you say it runs great, do you think you lost any torque? I'm also thinking about a vacuum problem as far as the idle goes, but the stall speed?....hmmm...is the new cam more radical than the one before?...maybe your powerband is different now. What RPM will the converter flash at now?

Barry H Aug 17th, 01, 11:25 AM DropTop,
The cam (280H) is the same, simply rebuilt the engine, replaced 72cc chamber heads with 62cc 461 heads raising compression to about 9.75:1 according to my calculations. A good 350-375 HP engine. Did nothing except replace the front and rear seal, and filter in the PG. I used to have a pronounced stall (its a 2500 Hughes converter)as I have said, now it just seems like a normal stock converter. I'm going to check my vacuum, but I have power brakes and they are operating properly. Thanks for the quick responses
ZZ430DropTop67RS Aug 17th, 01, 12:13 PM Barry, I'm really reaching on this one but, what ATF are you using now? Maybe the converter doesn't "like" it. ...here's another stretch>>..are your rear brakes the same as before?..are they holding good? Is your rolling start flash lower than it was before?

oger Aug 17th, 01, 07:27 PM I just talked to the resident trans expert {40 years of experience} he said modulator won't do it I thought throttle rod adjustment might he said no. It looks like you might have dropped something in the convertor or it just happened to die when you put the new engine in
