I hope one of you smart fellows can help me with my starting / running problem on my 327 210hp stock 2 barrel carb 350 turboHydro 69 Camaro.

It’s been running perfect since I bought it a year ago. Anyway… I was going up a hill and I felt it spit up through the carburetor and lose power for a split second. Then it continued to run well.

That evening after driving about 20 minutes I shut it off. When I tried restarting it about 3 minutes later it just would only turn over. I took the air cleaner off to see if it was getting fuel. It was. I tried turning it over with the Air Clean off… then it spit up out of the carb and there was a small flame!

Anyway… after numerous tries… it turned over and I was on my way.

Can anybody fill me in on what I should check?

Thanks guy… I really appreciate your help!

Check your timing. Sounds like you may have spit a chain. The most likely cause of a carb backfire is when a plug fires and that intake valve is open. I think early 327's had that fine plastic covered cam gear.

Might be time for a new set of points/condenser.

May be a long shot but condensation in the distributor cap could cause it also.

Thanks all for your help. Tonight I replaced the burnt points, replaced the condensor... timed her and replaced the spark plugs. Drives like a new 1969 Camaro!

Happy Holidays!
