Could be a bad starter/solenoid, or it needs shimming. When the starter wears out sometimes the bendix won't return and when the engine starts the starter stays engaged.

There also sounds like there could be a short in the harness to keep power going to the starter even when the key is turned off. You really need to get the car to a mechanic to have it fixed. You'll probably spend more by replacing parts that MIGHT be bad instead of letting a mechanic look at it and determine what it really needs.

Sounds to me like a bad solenoid.I'd install a whole starter, though. When you jumped it,are you meaning the battery,or starter? I think you are saying the starter whines, but did'nt engage at first. Then, after jumping it,the starter kept running. Was the engine turning over?

I'm assuming the battery is dead, charge it up,or replace it.I've seen starters stick when the battery is low volts.Check the starter wiring.Purple wire goes to the S terminal, small lug nearest the engine block.Make sure the batt cable is not touching the purple wire. The purple wire has power when cranking. If all this is good, starter is junk.
