View Full Version : Rear axle swap
Severe Feb 23rd, 00, 03:14 PM I have a 67 camaro with a 10 bolt non-posi 2.73 rear-end. My ? is, is there any doner car that I can get with a 12 bolt posi 3.73 rear-end with multi-leaf suspention that will bolt on or without difficult mods?
I also want a 700R4 is there a car that I can get both from maybe newer like 88-92?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

1st & 2nd GENGuy Feb 23rd, 00, 04:24 PM I believe GM stopped putting 12 bolts in cars in the early seventies.

68SS ZZ4, 4sp T-10, 12 bolt, getting painted
78Z28, 330hp vortec, TH350, 10 bolt (just finished)
big gear head Feb 23rd, 00, 04:25 PM 12 bolt rear ends were only made from '65 to '72. The only ones with multi leaf springs that will fit your car are the '68/'69 camaro rears. The '67 camaros all had mono leafs. Can't help you with the 700R4.
SS396CAMARO Feb 23rd, 00, 04:29 PM what about birds, did they come with 12's
shelbyz28 Feb 23rd, 00, 05:05 PM i think so, but pontiac was different. I'm pretty sure of this cause my uncle has both
Steve R Feb 23rd, 00, 06:49 PM Nova's from 68-70 could come with 12 bolts (SS's inparticular), maybe even 71 or 72. Good luck finding any 12 bolt, they are very hard to find.

BIGBADBOWTIE Feb 24th, 00, 05:58 AM 67-69 camaros,68 through (72-74 10 bolt) novas will fit.I believe the nova rear is a little narrower but only by an 1". Don't quote me on the size.

8.5"10 bolts ars stronger than people give them credit.

JimM Feb 24th, 00, 06:42 AM don't overlook the late model 8.5" 10 bolts. They're almost as strong as a 12 bolt, plentiful, cheap, and more likely to have posi. Take a tape measure and shop the junkyards. It doesn't cost much to have spring perches welded on, so just look for the correct width.

rodsters Feb 25th, 00, 11:26 AM I have the same lousy rearend in my 68 camaro. What all would be needed to change the guts to make it a 3:73 posi?
Steve R Feb 25th, 00, 05:55 PM You would need to get a posi carrier and the gears you want. I think Eaton and someone else makes carriers. While you are in there you might as well replace all the bearings and seals. The best thing to do would be find a competent rear end shop and discuss with them what you want.
