i was talking to an older guy one day and he was telling me how he use to race at the track and all
he was saying that he used some sort of y-pipe...he said instead of the air passing through the muffler,at the switch of a button the air would by pass to another pipe....i have no idea what he was talking about can anyone give me some info?

Some times called an exhaust cutout. It would reroute the exhaust to the lakers or lake pipes. Does that help? LOL

is this for more hp? i never heard of lake pipes before?

I guess you could call them early model side pipes. Probably a small gain in hp. Large gain in noise.

However, with properly sized headers, pipes and muffler, you can get a resonant effect in the exhaust system that will make the engine scavange exhaust gasses from the cylinder better. So it depends on the setup. But open exhaust is not guaranteed to give you more HP.
