Hello all.
I have a mysterious rattling over bumps in my 1978 Z. I looked under the car with the wheels off the ground and found nothing loose. I then lower the car onto ramps to compress the shocks and again found no noise or evidence of the mystery rattle. The exhaust is tight and not touching the body. All the ball joints and tie rods are nice and tight too. As well as the shock mounts and all the bushings I could see. Please help. Thanks for trying.

Try having someone go with you for a ride and sit in the back listening for any leads to the location. That'll narrow your search.

Pitman arm is fine. So are the bushings on the sway bars. This weekend I'm going to jack it up and test the A-arms with a crowbar. I can't thing of anything else.

Are the tabs on the front outer brake pads staked tightly to the caliper. The outer pads will rattle like crazy if they aren't. Step lightly on the brake pedal when going over bumps and see if the noise stops.

Good stuff here. I'd like to add a loose catalytic substrate inside the converter

Hello Green Hornet,
Have you checked to see if someone left you a present in your gas tank? http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif

Another thing I thought of, Take a Sledge Hammer wack the tread of your tire....Have a friend search for the noise.
I dont think I hafto caution you about swinging a sledge by the fenders.

I'm having a similar problem. I was getting the worst noises and vibrations when I turned left or got on the gas. I thought it was in the front end because I just rebuilt everything and maybe I did something wrong. I checked and rechecked everything that has to do with the front end. After almost losing my mind I started working my way back and I found I have a busted trans mount and the noise and vibration was because when I turned or got on the gas the trans was shifting and lifting off the mount causing the driveshaft to hit the trans tunnel. You might want to check yours out. I swear I thought it was in the front end from the get go and was glad to find it is only a mount.

I had a noise in my front end (I mean my cars front end) it was loose shims in the upper control arm, the nuts keeping the shims in place loosed up and caused a clunking noise, maybe that's the prob...PITA!! good luck Mike

You said you just rebuilt everything, did you lube the ball joints? If not they will make a loud clunking noise. Assuming everything is tight that is the only thing I can think of that wouldnt be noticible by visual inspection.

Ditto !!! Irritating rattle in the front end. Been there. Front disk brake pads. Outer pad tabs not compressed for a tight fit in the caliper. Might suggest a front disk pad kit.
Good Luck !
