Well, basically here's the issue. My camaro's got a pretty violent shake, it starts light around 45 and just gets worse the faster I go. I've replaced the tires, had an alignment done, and replaced the inner and outer tierods. . . they were locked up.

After all the work, it's still shaking like mad. I've checked the shocks and wheel bearings so it's not there either. I've also done a pretty extensive check on the engine and found no issues there.

Any advice is appreciated.

Forgot to add the info on the car itself. duh. It's an '88 Camaro with a 5.0, automatic. Sorry bout that.

Could have a bent rim. If the shake is not originating in the front end, it could be an out-of -balance driveshaft. Balance washers are tack welded onto the driveshaft, and after years of service can fall off, causing a bad vibration. When did the vibration start? Was it after any major re-do of the car, or was it always there?

Also, have you checked the motor mounts and transmission mounts? If one or both are gone, she will shake up a storm.

First I'd put it up on heavy duty wood blocks and run it up to 45 and see if it still shakes. You better make sure the car is secure and preferably with the front bumper against a brick wall to make sure it doesn't get away from you. Next thing to do would be to disconnect the driveshaft and do the same thing and see what happens. Be REAL careful if you do this though!

Unfortunately I'm not too sure how long it's been going on, I bought it a few weeks ago as a project car, and that guy didn't drive it much, he had only had it for 2 months and kept it at home. (his ungrateful son didn't want it)

I've checked the rims, they are in pretty good shape, no bends or warping.

Yes, I've checked the motor/tranny mounts. . . they all look pretty good.

If car has alot miles, it could need a change of struts and shocks. You've stsated you've done the tires and alignment and checked for bent wheel, but no bent axle yet.

Like Jon suggests, put rear of car up onto jack stands and run the car carefully through the gears and see if the shake returns. This will show alot with the rear axle and its related items.

I had a vibration with mine and it turned out that the u joints were shot. Had them rep;aced and the shaft balanced for $65. No vibration now.

Bad u-joints on mine. I just changed them and solved my vibration problem. Does your vibration feel like it's in the seat or the steering? If it's the seat check suspension, tire balance, bent wheels and drive train.

is the vibration related to speed, or rpm? If you put the trans in second, does it start vibrating at the same speed it does in drive?

Had something similar once, flexplate was almost comepletely cracked off around the flange!

like the other guys said you first need to jack it up and run it to eliminate anything in the front end if it still shakes it will be from the tranny back if it doesnt then you need to look in the front (dont forget wheel bearings and rotors even mud in the wrong places) but odds are it is probably going to be in the driveline and maybe rear end bearings when you have it up check for play on the back rear wheels and go over everything that moves with a fine tooth comb if it stll shakes then I would take the driveline to be ballanced but make sure it is a shop that specilizes in this. I had a driveline biult in a standerd machine shop and it has some bad vibs.

good luck

Thanks for all the advice. It's probably the driveline. The shake is from speed, all my bearings are good, no mud or debris anywhere. I've already popped it into second and taken it up to 45 and the shake started again. I'm thinking it's either the u-joints or drive shaft.

I had it propped up today, a friend helped me out. First thing, to rule out the engine we kept it in neutral and let it rev up for a while, nothing happened. Once I put it in gear and ran it up it started going nuts again. We couldn't get a good look at the joints because his lamp decided to die out on us, I'm going to take it to a shop this weekend.

Thanks again everyone.

drive shaft will come out in 5 min after jacking her up. If you have vice it will take you about 1 hour at the most to change out the u-joints. U-joints cost about $15.00 ea. If you pull the drive shaft and have someone change them out figure about $15.00 ea. That's what I paid here because I don't have vice but they are very easy to do if you have one. Might save you a few bucks and you can be back on the road fairly quick.

Thanks for the info, I was considering doing it myself since I have access to the military auto hobby shops around the island, but since I am in Hawaii you pretty much double the price of anything on the mainland when it comes to auto parts. . . there are just some things that even checker's won't price match.
