I have a 350 out of a '73 Camaro with 270hp stock. It has been bored .30 over, stock crank, stock size hyd cam, HEI w/Accel Super Coil, Accel 8.8 RaceWires, Bosche platinums, Performer intake and 600cfm carb, stock heads off a 400 with bigger valves and springs, B&M TorkMaster 2400 conv., Turbo 350 w/shift kit, 3.73 8.25 10 bolt. Thats the basics of the car.
I'm just starting to tinker with the advance curve; springs, weights and all of that. Right now the stock ones are on there.
The problem is when I take off from a dead start, like drag racing, and floor it the RPM's come up to around 3800, maybe 4000, the front end sits down, the motors running great, and I get a huge shift and then it makes up for what I lost when it was in first gear.
It's like it comes out of its powerband. What could be causing this in my setup or what can I add or change to fix the problem. E-mail me at chevy9966@hotmail.com if needed.

A stock replacement 350 cam is pretty small...194/202 @.050 with .390/.410 lift. Assuming that this is the cam you are running, they dont do much past 4000. However, it could be fuel delivery...what kind of shape is your fuel pump in? I would check the pressure with a remote gauge when racing and see what happens. COuld also be tired valve springs.

Also, your compression may be a little low with stock 400 heads. They have a 78cc chamber and would drop your compression to 8.5 to 8.9 to 1 depending on head gasket thickness and piston down bore.

I have a stock type mechanical fuel pump that is about 2 years old. Also have heavy valve springs put in almost 3 years ago. Have not put many miles on it since then. A guy I race with said I need some steeper gears, maybe around 3.90 or 4.11's.

More gear will only aggrevate the problem. Do you know what your cam specs are?

I just know it is the stock size.
