I have a 1958 Sedan Delvry by Chevy.Well i took my original 3 speed out and I am working on putting in a 87 305 tuned port 700 R4 tranny in.I have a very puzzling wiring problem,Because it was wired for generator and now i am not sure how or even where to start on converting this to alternator.Anyone have any ideas?
My wiring is from hell!

As long as the car had a 12 volt generater than you can just install a one wire alt. If it was a 6 volt system than you need to either change all the old gauges and bulbs to 12 volt ones. Or you could by risistors to step down the voltage and keep the car stock looking.

I think you need to talk to someone with experience in the converson. The alt. change over is the least of your problems. I would go with an internal reg. type alt. they are much easier to work with.

Gm came out with 12 volt systems in 1955 for Chevrolet, using a generator.

GM came out with alternators in 1963, so '58 is set-up for 12 volt system.

So, three wire hook-up for gen, RED for BAT,
other two smaller gauge wires went to regulator for stator winding voltage.

Check at Library for reference manuals and schematics.
