I have a strange problem. I drove my 68 over the weekend and it ran fine. I go out to start it this morning and this is what happened. I turn the key to start the car and it starts. As soon as I release the key from the start position, it quits. Any suggestions? I am stunned!!!

If you've got a points type ignition, this is the classic symptom of a bad ballast resistor. The car uses 12 volts to start, but when the switch goes to the run position, it uses another wire to feed the distributor's points. That wire has a resistor somewhere inline to reduce the voltage to the points from 12 volts to around 6 volts. When the resistor fails, the circuit goes open, and no juice gets to the points--immediate shutdown! Find a wiring diagram and start looking for that resistor. Good luck.

Our cars use a resistance wire.Turn the key to run and check for volts at coil +. Should have something like 9 volts.

The points have to be in the open position to measure voltage at the coil or the voltage will go to ground through the points.
High point resistance due to contamination or carbon deposits, pitting of worn points could do it too.

You've got two wires that feed your coil. The main one comes through the firewall connector an is a resistor wire. The secondary lead is live only when starting the car. Juice is feed through the second wire from the second small terminal on the starter solenoid, usually marked "I". On your car, you've lost the main iginition power somewhere, but the secondary power is there, but only with the car in start position. Maybe the starter switch went bad.
