I've installed new points in my '69 302 and borrowed a dwell meter from a friend. Before I try using this thing, I have a few questions. I set the points at .019 before I reinstalled the distributor and was told that the dwell should be 28-32. I need to start the engine and reset the timing.
Once I get the timing correct, how do you hook up the dwell meter? It has two clamps that I assume attach to the battery. Where does the third clamp attach?
The dwell meter has a select knob with a 1200 and 6000 detent for 8 cylinder. What is this for?
So, once all of this is straightened out, do you simply have the car idling to adjust the dwell?

Dave ,you should have a red, black and green wire red to postive black to ground and green to the negtive side of the coil,Set the dwell to 28 to 32 then set the timing on the engine,,just a note dewll changes the timing,, so set the dwell 1st then adjust the timing,,Frank

Dave i forgot to tell BECAREFULL to to touch yourself to ground while adjusting the dwell,,it will shock you if you DONT have a point adjusting tool that is made for setting points, most you can adjust with a allen or a flathead screwdriver, just dont ground yourself to the car as you adjust it,,belive me it will let you know if you are grounded!!!

In reference to the detents and numbers, you may have a dwell meter that also has an RPM selector and scale ... I remember Sears used to sell one like that...They called it an Engine Analyzer ... Yeah, set the RPM, then set the dwell, then set the timing...After setting the timing, you may have to adjust the idle speed again ...

Thanks guys. I'll print this. I guess that I should invest in the flexible points adjusting allen wrench. I hate getting shocked like that.
