Lately I've been having problems with the starter on my 89 RS. It seems like when the engine gets to normal operating temperature and then I go to turn it off, I have to wait like 45 mins for it to cool back down. Now I have no clue on starters, I'm a chick and I don't know everything about my new toy so bear with me. http://www.camaros.net/forum/wink.gif I was told that it's the starter seizing up...? But if anyone could help out I'd appreciate it.

With a name like kitten, we sort of assumed that you were a "chick", but hey, you never know these days... Anyway, give us a little more information, Are you saying (1) the engine turns over very slowly? or (2) The engines turns okay, but never starts or (3) the engine doesn't turn over at all or (4) ???
Give us more information... All electrical problems begin with verifying that you have a good battery and sufficient current. Heat can and does inhibit current flow ... Also, fuel system problems can cause hard starting. Be a bit more descriptive of your car symptoms, and we'll gladly toss some possibilities and suggestions your way . All of us macho car guys love to help "chicks" and "kittens" in distress...

Sounds like the dreaded heat soak problem.

Well when this happens, it doesn't do anything. I turn the key and it's just silent. Nothing, nada. But all the electronics work though, heater - radio etc. when I have the key turned forward once but not when I turn it all the way to start it. It acts like the battery is trying to make it turn over but it doesn't. It doesn't make any noise or try to turn over whatsoever. I have a new battery and everything electronical works great except this thing with the starter. Should I get a new one or could it be something more serious? Eek, I hope that helps a lil bit more.

Kitten you could solve that problem with a mini starter from summitracing.com It's about $150 it's a high torque starter that NEVER fails to start our cars. check it out! PS obviously the cables etc. need to be good too.

I had the same problem with my 1980, with a 350 in it. It had headers put in it and came really clase to the starter. This cause a heat soak condition and would barely turn over when the car was hot. I bought a starter heat sheild blanket from Summit for 20 bucks or so and installed it and havent had a problem at all since. i would try this before i shell out 150 for a new starter. GOOD LUCK

Kitten, it sounds like the heat is taking a toll on your starter. If it is the original starter, you may be fine with just a regular replacement. You are not running a high compression modified kind of engine, so you shouldn't have any special requirements...the heat shield certainly wouldn't hurt, but if it is the original starter, replace it. Also, if the battery cables are original, go ahead and replace them also at this time. Last but not least, make sure that you have sufficient coolant in the radiator and that the car is not running hotter that it suppose to be ... watch your temperature gauge... is your fan functioning properly to cool the engine? Just things to consider...

I took your advice and got myself a heat shield. That worked great.
