View Full Version : carb balance

I'm curious - when I was tuning the idle circuit on my carb, I decided, after getting it balanced properly, to run the screws back in and see how far out they were. I expected them to be ABOUT the same number of turns out. What I found was that one was two or more times farther out than the other. Don't recall the exact numbers of turns out, but while one was like 3/4 to 1 turn out, the other was more like 2 or more turns out. I thought they should be close to the same. I had started the tuning procedure by turning one in 'til it started slowing down substantially, then turned it back out for max rpm, then did the other, adjusting the idle speed back into place in the process as recommended. Then I checked the setting and found the huge discrepancy. Since then, I've checked the plugs, and all cylinders seem to be running fine, based on the plugs (though I do feel like I've lost performance since the engine was first fired up untuned, and driveability has gotten a little more erratic - fine sometimes, then it flakes out once in a while).

What's the deal???

Try using a vacuum gauge connected to the port with constant vacuum in your carb. Look for maximum vacuum reading in the gauge. Take a look at the holley web page.
