recently purchased brand new 2000 silverado z-71 with 5.3 liter vortec. after 1st oil change, noticed a loud sound (like valves or pistons) when starting it up cold. has only 7300 miles on it. anyone know anything about this problem?

Did you use an AC Delco oil filter ? If so make certain that it is the correct one. Some of the aftermarket filters do not have the correct anti drainback valve in them and will allow cause the lifters and bearings to be noisy for the first few seconds until the filter fills up. Also, make certain you used the correct weight oil, I am pretty sure it should be 5w30. I have not heard of any other noise problems with those motors when cold. If the filter does not take care of the problem, it is certainly still under warranty so I would be back to the dealer ASAP.
By the way, and this is just my opinion, 7000 miles is way too long for the first oil change. If you plan on keeping the truck, I would do it every 3000 miles.

thank you so much for your reply, (note: this is the second oil change we had done) we took the truck to a oil change place and they used 10w30 valvoline and used a penzoil pz28 filter. the 1st oil change was also valvoline 10w30 and unsure about the filter. these are quick lube places and i would of thought they know all about all different vehicles. but we will certainly look into those things.

Be sure to put the proper oil back in it. 5w 30. The specs were built on using that specific weight.

hey, thanks to you too. question: how much damage do you think there may have been due to these mistakes at these jiffy lube places? i am going to go to a dealership this morning and get it right.

Just by using 10-30 instead of 5-30 shouldn't have cause you a problem at all. Was this a one time deal with the tapping after the oilk change? If so they proabably put the filter on dry (did not fill it with oil), I always fill my filter during an oil change to prevent the tapping and oil starvation. If this is a continuing problem I would have to agree that they may have installed the wrong filter. If the wrong filter has been installed there could be engine damage. What type of oil pressure do you see on your gauge? I would definetly get it checked out right away and would not continue to drive it if it is still tapping.

The tolerances (sp) are much closer on the Vortecs and new generation motors now that requires a lighter weight of oil to get to the bearings etc. Too much weight good cause some starvation. I'm not saying that if you put in the wrong oil it will ruin your engine but the dealer might ask and will perform tests to verify before warranty will be executed. Just my 2 cents.

The first new Chevy pickup I bought used 5w30 and I asked the dealer about it. His reply was it was how they got the mileage to come up a bit and if I wanted to run something else it would not void the service contract!!

Multi viscosity oil (this is a crude discription http://www.camaros.net/forum/wink.gif ) has a wider temp range that it operates in compared to straight weight oil. In a cold enviroment it acts like 5 weight and in hot weather like 30 weight if it has a 5w30 rating. If the weather is not pushing an extream in either direction 10w30 should cause no problem....

I agree with Bill K and feel it's best to run what the Manufacture or builder recomends. It just takes one variable out of the equation if warranty work is required...
