I have an original(?) AC push type oil filler cap (chrome) for my '67 SS350 that has what looked like some type of hair filter filling. My guess is this filling stopped any oil going back up the tube from spilling out.

My question is - what is this filling and where can I buy some replacement "stuff"

Mine is all brittle and falling out - so wanted to replace.

Thanks

Steve

On the old engines with the oil filler tube, and PCV set-up,like my 327,there are no breathers on the valve covers.I imagine the fresh crankcase air is drawn in through this filter for the PCV system. So I think it's there to keep dirt and crud out of the lifter valley.Anyway,I have seen new chrome filler tube breathers in either the D&R or Year One catalogs.I have never seen the filters sold separately though.

Furnace filter hair would be about the same consitancy, if you can clean out the old stuff and install the new stuff, might be hard to replace, Just buy a new cap.
