I purachased an 89 RS with a 305 V8 about 6 mos. ago. The car has 81k miles and has started without any problems until recently. The engine would turn over, eventually start and then die. It would not sputter or anything, just die like an instant loss of ignition. I replaced the distributor cap and the problem seemed to be immediately resolved.
It ran fine for about 3 days until I decided to also replace the plug wires. I have replaced 4 of the 8 wires and now I have the same symptoms. I have checked the connections and everything seems to be fine. I am far from knowledgeable as a mechanic and any ideas ideas would be greatly appreciated!

tony,i have a '90rs and kinda had the same problem.it wound up being the ign. switch on the steering column. cost about $10.00.hope this helps. mark p.

Hi Tony,I have same car 89 RS 5.0 and i have the same problem,but I fix that so I change Ignition module that cost around 36.00$.That is placed on distributor under cap and rottor.I hope that help you too.

A basic tune-up includes all wires, cap, rotor and plugs. When the ignition system gets some age on it, resistances build up and lead to problems. You can develope carbon tracking inside the cap, burn away the rotor electode, or burn up the little ball in the top of the cap that the rotor rides against. Sounds like you've already adressed most of that issue.

At the end of thethread http://www.camaros.net/forums/showthread.php?t=120237&highlight=longest+wire I posted a technique for installing the wires that'll help keep them straight. Sometimes the aftermarket wires aren't quite the same length as the factory wires and can lead you off in the weeds. Get the firing order and make sure the wires are on the correct terminals. The small block chevy motors firing order was 18436572.
