: My car wont idle, it just wants to die on me
Rick67 Aug 15th, 01, 02:51 AM I ran my camaro last Sunday and it ran great. I pulled it out last night to cruise down Woodward and it was idling like crap. It seemed to be running really rich (nasty bluish smoke.) It stalls if I don't keep giving it gas and it seems to run ok at higher speeds.
I can't figure out what has changed. I need to check the timing but aside from that does anyone have any suggestions? Between this and my wife ready to give birth I'm not sure if I'll make the dream cruise Saturday.

RickD Aug 15th, 01, 04:53 AM Same thing happened to me. The front needle wasn't sealing in the carb and gas was pouring into the carb. Easy to check for with the air cleaner off. You'll see gas pouring down the throat. Just start the car, turn it off and check. In my case, my first clue was the sound of liquid dripping!

I checked last night. Your right a ton of gas pours into the manifold. How did you fix it? I'm hoping I wont have to take the carb apart.

RickD Aug 15th, 01, 07:10 AM What carb do you have? When I drained the fuel out, put the sight plug back in, the car ran fine. I went and bought a needle/seat assembly and replaced it. Easy to do on the Holley. ALso changed the filters. I have one before and after the fuel pump. When I took the bowl off to check, I really didn't see anything. It only takes a spec of crud to make this happen. Sometimes a rap on the bowl with a screwdriver handle will free it up. Or when you drain the bowl, it will flush out.

ORENCH Aug 15th, 01, 09:08 AM Rick, is it necessary to remove the bowl to replace the needle?
RickD Aug 15th, 01, 09:39 AM No, it unscrews from the top. Unscrew the lockscrew, remove the adjusting nut and unscrew the needle assembly. I assume you have the externally adjustable floats.

Rick67 Aug 15th, 01, 10:21 AM Thanks, for the quick response. I'll take a stab at it tonight and let you know the results tomorrow.

Rick67 Aug 15th, 01, 10:23 AM ORENCH,
Holley has an average web site that shows really nice pictures on how to do that. I don't remember the address but you should find it if you do a search.
