Anybody here know anything about the coding system used on cars built at the Van Nuys plant? One book I used says it's still being "worked on." I have a 69 RS/SS that was built in Van Nuys Oct. 69. It has the code "M504" listed on the plate on the firewall. Just wondering if you can help.

Sorry, no one has ever decoded those #'s, probably never will. It was some kind of internal LA plant work order code, or something of that nature, and is of no use in deciphering a cars originality. Don't feel bad, I have one too........Are you having problems determining whether you car is original or not? If so, check the archives in the Tag Team section, there's PLENTY of good information on what to look for, without having an "X" code to verify it with......KZ

Angie, welcome to the best site on the net. I seen your post in the bench racing section. I like the 69 RS/SS cars. My cousin has one sitting in his garage for years now he keeps meaning to restore. Its totally complete and mint but needs paint. Still has the 8-track attatched to the console. Unfortunately I know he will never get around to it and never sell it. I get the feeling if he does sell it that it won't be to me so he won't have to see it anymore. Oh well, at least its garaged and not getting in any worse condition.
KZ is right about the number you asked about
If you don't mind it would be interesting to see the vin number and cowl tag info if you don't mind posting it. Its always fun to decode that stuff and to compare to other cars. Welcome and don't hesitate to ask anything.

Angie...would you please post your VIN and Trim tag data here (or you can e-mail it to me). Thanks,

PS - your car has to be a Oct. '68 car. The Van Nuys plant didn't produce Camaros into late '69. Yours should be a 10B or a 10C car, correct?

angie, I have a LA car too. Fortunately the previous owner kept the protect-o-plate. Do you have the POP? If you do it may also give you a clue.

most la cars have the build sheet on the gas tank. top driver's side towards the front. probably have to drop the tank to see it. mine was in such poor condition it wasn't much help.
as far as the vin coding, i read this about the '67:
"**Los Angeles cars had a code on the first line, such as J316. It is believed to be an internal plant code for dating of production. Example: J316 would have been the 316th car built during the "J" period, which looks to be approximately the third week in April. It is believed that around 300 cars were produced during each letter designation. Examples: 04A = G238 and 04B = H433."
you 504 # would mean that maybe they increased the number from 300 to ?, but i think it's more of a build date thing than what sort of options you might have.
my 12C car has a code of S199

Mike

I think the 300 cars per letter theory is wrong. Mine reads H744

------------------
1969 Camaro RS/SS 350/4spd, Azure Turquoise (55-55)
Van Nuys Built 11B
currently on the rotisserie
1984 Z28 w/ZZ4 conversion 25th car to roll of the line at Van Nuys

The LA coding cycles..but there is no fixed intervals that I can see. Sometimes the "period" (A, B, C, etc.) has a much larger gap in numbers....for example...

H024
H221
H596
H616
H744

Still working on it, though....

Thanks McCorry for pointing that out. My car is a 10C & it never occurred to me that by Oct. 69 they would be in the new model year (duh). That also explains the short spoiler that I have that everyone accuses of being "wrong." I'll post the vin & other info tonight when I get home. i do most of my reading at work during lucnh.
