Hi, I looked at a DZ block today, the stamp was
V1I11DZ, ( second number was a I) and the vin was stamped by the oil filter in the rough cast. Block casting date was K-6-8 ( Nov 6/68) , vin appeared to be 19N540066., which makes sense for a Nov build date.
The vin was hard to read, but i am pretty sure that was what it read. I have heard that the plant workers started to stamp the vins by the filter around Jan/69, however this is the earliest i have seen where the vin is not on the deck.
The Pad appeared original, correct grain etc. I have a V1I21DZ in my data base and the fonts and numbers are the same as this block. Both D,s are raised a little, making me believe the same gang holder was used for both blocks.
Anyone care to comment as to the earliest they have seen the vin by the oil filter?
Thanks in Advance.

Seems I remember reading that they did it on some cars early in the build cycle, went back to the pad and then got the "official" go ahead to go back to the oil filter area.

Am I imagining this?

I owned a Van Nuys car built first week of August 1968, serial number 32. VIN stamp by the oil filter.
