View Full Version : Power Steering: Do my eyes deceive me?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't power steering lines (to and from the pump to the box) supposed to be sealed? On my recently purchased '69 Camaro I noticed that one line has a hose clamp attaching it to the box on one end and another attaching it to the pump on the other. Aren't these lines under pressure? Isn't this a big No-No?

Now, if this is incorrect, how do I fix it? Can I just replace the line?

Thanks!

The hose with the clamps is the low pressure side. Usually a smaller diameter hose.

i'm pretty sure that both lines on my 68 have fittings on the ends, not clamps. i was wrong. smaller dia. hose has clamps.

That is just the return line. The other line does all the work. It is correct.

Okay, so I guess I'm good then. Now that leaves me with another problem...I've been finding small pussles of orangish fluid under my car from time to time. I originally thought it was the previously mentioned power steering lines (especially since it seems to be wet around that area). Now I don't know what it is. Any clues before I go searching?

The high pressure line may be leaking. That isn't uncommon at all. As a matter of fact, mine was leaking when I bought the car. If you determine it is leaking take it with you to the parts store, as I had trouble matching mine up. Things get changed over the years.

Most of the power steering hoses I found at the parts stores were rough textured, wrapped construction. I finally got a "nearly correct" smooth hose from NAPA (had to be special ordered) I say nearly correct, because the pressure line into the steering box is somewhat taller than the original. Also, the return hose had a pinch clamp, rather than the screw type clamp. My original was screw type, but Rick's sells both, so I assumed either would be correct. You know what they say about assumptions!

On your leak - what color is the coolant in your radiator? The new "Dexcool" coolants are orangish-colored - could be a coolant leak. If your coolant is the usual green, then it's something else, most likely power steering fluid.

Nope. My anti-freeze is green.

Could it be something else? Maybe where ever the fluid is escaping from is rusty. But, where. I need to jack this puppy up and take a look at it.
