View Full Version : DZ carbs -acceptable date codes
69 RS-Z Mar 12th, 04, 08:08 AM Hello all,
What is an acceptable date code for a 69 Z/28 carb reference the build date? Also do 186 heads use an "I" or "J" date code for the month of September?
thanks
Kelvin
Jonesy Mar 12th, 04, 09:58 AM Heads would have used "I" for September. Anything that the date was cast used "I" such as intakes, heads, blocks etc. All stamped components used "J" such as alternators, starters, distributors etc.
I think within a month previous of the build is what I would want. I'm sure you'll get other opinions.
Unreal Mar 12th, 04, 02:16 PM I was thinking carbs were installed on the final assembly line, not the engine plant. If my recolection is correct, the carb should be dated to the car, not the engine.
bertfam Mar 12th, 04, 02:36 PM Unreal's correct however, Holly carbs were built in batches and could be a few days to several months prior to the assembly of the car. I've seen three cars with L78 engines in them (and my own L89) with car build dates from early April through late June, 1968, and they all had "833" carbs on them!

z28doug Mar 12th, 04, 04:09 PM My 02C build Van Nuys Z has a 912 date code on the carb.. I also have a friend with an original Van Nuys Z built probably the same day as mine (VIN's are very close) and he has the same date code on his.
69 RS-Z Mar 13th, 04, 05:33 AM Thanks for the replies. I am a little concerned now. My 10b Z has mostly September dated parts except the carb which is an 861. Could I have the wrong carb?
Gary L Mar 13th, 04, 05:57 AM Just my observation, but when I was looking for a 4053 carb, there was not alot of date variation available. I would think that they were built in batches like stated by Ed.
bertfam Mar 13th, 04, 10:55 AM Don't sweat it. You're close enough. Remember, Special High Performance engines (and their associated components) are not always inside the "accepted" date ranges because of the rarity and the problems associated with them. My 05D car (1968) has several items that are March built. The block, carb, distributor, etc... Heck, the Aluminum Heads are JANUARY!!
This is especially true with Van Nuys cars. To a lesser degree with Norwood cars, but still VERY possible.

69 RS-Z Mar 13th, 04, 07:56 PM Jonesy,
Does that stamped date code rule apply to 772 fans? Jerry's book shows a 772 fan with a "J" code as October.
thanks
Kelvin
JohnZ Mar 18th, 04, 12:08 PM The internal standard for GM-produced components called for "I" to be used on casting dates (cast-in numbers), but not on stamped dates (distributors, alternators, starters, etc.). Don't know if it applied to outside-purchased parts or not, but GM didn't make the fans. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
