I have a 69' Z/28 that I have been decoding using "The Definitive
> 1969 Camaro Z/28-SS396 Fact Book". All the date and casting #'s check
> out to be correct (302DZ,M-21 Tranny,Heads,Manifold along w/ other misc
> items (like alternator and clutch fan), along with the X-33 on the cowl tag.I get to the rear axle and find the
> tube stamped w/ BM1126 G2 (meaning 3:31 Standard axle - Nov. 26)and the
> carrier casting # 3894860 (1969 12 Bolt)with a date code of K228 (Nov 28,
> 1968). Now I know that Z/28'S come standard with a 3:73 (nothing lower
> numerically)and a 12 Bolt Posi. When I have it jacked up I can spin one
> wheel and the other one will turn with it so I believe it to be a posi. I
> thought all 12 bolts were posi's, but I heard that there were 12 bolt non-posi's.
> Could the reason it does not match to a Z/28 be that maybe the tube was replaced but not the carrier even though the dates

What's the build date on your cowl tag and the DZ code (i.e. V1024DZ)?

You could get lower ratio's with the Z28. The 3.73 was the recommended ratio. Since your car has the X33, it would be a late November or early December car at the earliest. What's the date code off the trim tag along with the NOR number and VIN? That will help determine if it might be the original rear.

Thanks for the response Jeff! I was not aware you could order lower ratios. The cowl tag reads as follows:
ST69 12437 NOR231041
TR 711 79 BPNT
01C X33
(This states that it is a Norwood, Jan., week 3 car)
VIN # IS 124379N586597
(This states that it a Norwood car, #86,597 Camaro built)
What about the axle tube # BM1126 G2? Does'nt the "BM" also mean standard axle in addition to 3:31? And would'nt the # also be followed with a "P" stamp after indicating Posi manufacturer if it were a posi (it does not have the "P")?
Thanks again for the help!!! Very Camaro collection you have!! JL8 & x-ram...WOW!!

You could have the original rear end. I know there was a "econo" rear gear available and Posi was not mandatory. You won't know for sure unless your find a protecto plate or build sheet which will confirm the axle code.
Good luck!

Very doubtful it is the original rear, IMO. In January 69 NOR cars, every rear axle I've seen has been made in a few days before the car was built. 2 months off is too much.
BM = 3.31 open 12 bolt

Do you also have your car's transmission code and the alternator date code? http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif
Sounds like a pretty original car!

Thanks!
