A body shop owner/friend is currently working on a '68 convertible Firebird that has been converted to a Camaro. The VIN is Pontiac but the Cowl tag is Camaro. Most of the body panels are Camaro. My question is on the small block in it. It has the suffix YW. Anyone know what this is from?

Horsepower Cubic Inches Trans Code Compression Cam Heads Carb Year

335 400 A YW 10.75 67 16 4 68
335 400 A YW 10.75 67 16/62(RAIII) 4 69
250 455 A YW 8 67 4X 4 74
200 455 A YW 7.6 67 5I 4 75

You will have to line up the top with the lower numbers. IE Horsepower is the far left number and then Cubic Inch is the next and so on.

Thanks Jeff. I'll look for the casting date the next time I see it. Is it in the same spot as a small block Chevy?

Cant find the placement of the number but the Partial VIN should be adjacent to the engine codes you posted. Should be out of a Firebird the way I read it.

I was at the shop yesterday and the owner of this car was there. I was telling him about how his car was converted from a Firebird, etc.
We discussed the engine and I wrote down the casting number and date code. He swore that it was a 327 block and he is right.
The casting number is 3858174 = 1964-67 327/275-350 hp, Full, A and Y body. The casting date was Feb. 22, 1966 (B226).

The engine stamp (F0224YW) appears original. This just doesn't make any sense. I only see Y? engine codes are for trucks but no YW. He had the engine built as a 327 and it does have chevy 'camel hump' heads but there isn't a VIN stamped on the pad.

Was this engine ever verified as being from the 66 truck? I have a block with the similar #'s. Casting # 3858174, casting date A276, engine code FOI29YW, and no partial VIN. Thanks

Yes, that's correct. YW is a 1966 327/185 from a C60, M60 or S60 truck. Your block was cast on January 27th, 1966 and the engine was assembled on January 29th at the Flint, Michigan engine plant.

Sorry guys, I've been away from a computer for the last week. (Do you realize how hard that is to do nowdays???!!!)

Anyway, the info was obtained from my 1969 Mitchell and 1969 Hollander Interchange manuals.
