Bought '69 Coupe 2-3 months ago..
Have replaced fuel filters, fuel pump, and 1/2 ft.of gas line. driving regularly, very light raw gas smell, when "punching it" very pronounced smell! The trunk is mostly rusted through...Anyone have a similar experience?

The car could be rich...and you're getting exhaust back into the car through the trunk/back seat....

If u are getting exhaust fumes back in the car (which)I think u are this is a very dangerous situation u could be over come by the fuems very quickly and it could hurt u very badly. When u drive the fumes are being sucked up into the trunk just like if u were to have the window open.. The passing air creates a area of low pressure which creates a vaccume and sucks the fumes into the car. This is something u should fix ASAP

i'm sure its the trunk floor pan,, use an old stop sign and rhino lining lol!!!..... floor pans are cheap about $70.00 they pretty much fall into place very easy ...honest, J.B.

mine does the same thing, My trunk pan is swiss cheese, and the shock towers are gone., and so is the drivers rear floor, so with all those holes you tend to smell like exhaust after a long cruise. I did manage to seal it up a bit with new watersheilds behind the door panels and rear 1/4 interior panels, and I installed a new rear seat and rear seat jute padding and new rubber windowfelts and it toned it down a bit,

However I think that the old T-Shirts stuffed into the rotted shock tower holes helped out the most...

But it still smells.

This also happens when your gas cap is not twisted on correctly. Strange but true.

Well, As I am very grateful for the help, I guess I didn't make the situation clear.... The car came w/stock intake, Rochester spreadbore (and smelled like RAW gas). I installed an Edelbrock intake/ carb and now smells exactly the same! The odor is raw gas
NOT exhaust fumes. Is there a vent for the tank somewhere? There mus be other folks out there who have had this problem and fixed it correctly....

It seems that you have replaced fuel pump and lines and filter from the pump to the carb ... to be thorough I would re-inspect for fuel seepage at fittings ... afterwards, I would back track the line from fuel pump back to tank...it would help if you could get the car on a lift to do this ... I wouldn't necessarily expect to find a wet spot...but also look for a stain created by the leak ... lastly, inspect the tank itself...the connection for the filler neck, the gasket around the sending unit, and of course, the fuel line there ... good luck ... there's no substitute for peace of mind

I had the same problem, it was the vented gas cap. Every time I got on it it would smell like gas bad. Only when the windows were open though.
Cheap fix but it took me forever to find it. I still smell gas every once in a while but not even close to how much I used to.

To all, I found that the previous owner had stuck a vented locking cap on the car... and gas "sloshes" out of the filler neck at the little vents. I will go purchase the correct type now! On to the next problem...
