I would seriously suggest that you ask a family member or friend who has done this kind of work before to assist you. You can do a lot of damage if you do not know what you are doing under the hood. Also, buy a Chiltons manual for your year/model car and read through the section that applies to the task at hand as it will give specific instructions for what you are trying to accomplish. It should also have diagrams to illustrate where the parts and pieces are. You will find the $12 price of the book to be well worth it in the long run. Lastly, always think safety first!!!!

Not to be a wise-a$$, but, if you don't know where it is...how can you possibly know you need to replace it??

If you've got a leak, but you don't know where the pump is, how can you possibly know it's the pump that's leaking. If you've got a noise, and you don't know where the pump is, how can you possibly know that it's the pump at fault. If it's some other generic cooling problem, it's probably NOT the pump. They generally keep working just fine until AFTER they're leaking and making a racket both. Don't just start replacing parts 'cause the resident "expert" told you, "oh...it's probably this". Find out what's definitely wrong first. Or enlist the "expert's" help, if you really trust them.

Just trying to save you a lot of headache and needless expense. On the other hand, learning how to do this stuff is not a bad idea - just don't leave yourself with an undriveable mess by jumping in too far too fast (says the guy whose father came home to see his 5 year-old's bike completely in pieces - down to the bearings - in the driveway).

Go69's advice that you get a friend or relative with previous experience, AND get a service manual, is good advice. That's probably where just about every single one of us started.

I should ammend that. A leaking, noisy water pump is not "working just fine". But it will continue pumping fairly effectively pretty much until it comes apart - at which point it'll be pretty obvious where it is!

The point is, know what you're fixing, and why, before you "fix" it. That comes from the experience of having done this process both the right way, and the wrong way, numerous times.
