View Full Version : Is this information true about the 1967 L78 cars?
Jeff H Aug 18th, 03, 06:39 AM I've never heard that the first few L78 cars had the 4P on the trim tag instead of the 4K. Is this car in the correct time frame for the 4P and still an L78 car? It says it has the protec-o-plate to prove it.

1967 Panther Aug 18th, 03, 07:04 AM I heard that was true but I thought the very first L78's did not have the rear tail pan painted black because there was no way for Fisher Body to distinguish the L48 from the L78
JOE58 Aug 18th, 03, 12:29 PM I don't know if you can use Bill Jenkins 67 L78 Camaro as a guide. Bill was getting very special treatment from Chevy. Chevy would do what they could to help Grumpy win on the drag strip and he could get them to build a 4P L78 if they had to. I asked Bill if the car was picked up from Warren Mich (Chevy Engenieering) or from Norwood. Bill couldn't remember but he did say his driver complained alot because the car had no radio or heater and he drove it back in the cold.
resto4u Aug 19th, 03, 03:35 AM This is an april 67 built car, not an early built car. I believe camaros did not start production til august of 1966. Roger
Jeff H Aug 19th, 03, 03:44 AM What they mean by early production is that it is an early L78 car. The L78 option was not available at the beginning of the year. It became an option some time in early 67 I think.
1967 Panther Aug 19th, 03, 12:20 PM Resto, he means early as far as BB's are concerned. I think Bill's car was about to be a 350 car and they installed the L-78 for him being there wasn't much thought to BB codes yet. I wouldn't put too much faith in this car on Ebay
Zedder Aug 19th, 03, 05:04 PM I would graemlins/thumbsup.gif ;) ;) ;)
Jeff H Aug 20th, 03, 03:32 AM Mark, have you seen this car? Is it the same guy you had someone look at a car for you? Seems legit if he has the p-o-p and #'s match.
restoman Aug 20th, 03, 05:29 AM If I was in the market, I would be all over this car. The upside is HUGE! Do your homework, but consider this. Even if the car is bogus( I don't think it is ), the parts as stated are worth a bunch.
JOE58 Aug 20th, 03, 06:02 AM Is there a registry for 1967 L78 cars? I have been researching 67 Yenko Camaros that were mostly L78 conversions except for the early ones. I think the Yenko 350 conversions got a YS6xx Yenko stock number and the L78 conversions got a YS7xx. The first YS701 car has a vin N227xxx which I think is a May built car? One of the CRG guys told me he thought the first 396s came out in Jan or Feb but this ebay car is a "early" April car? So did the 396 325 hp cars come out before and the 375 hp cars came out later? I have not seen many 1967 L78s so hard to tell.
Zedder Aug 20th, 03, 07:52 AM Jeff: Yes, the car is legit and will be on its way to the Great White North soon :D The owner isn't into computers so that is why the auction is still listed.
I had a friend look at the car for me on Saturday since it's a 16 hour one-way trip to GA from Ontario and I've been on too many wild goose chases to do that any more  I bought the car Saturday evening after locating the original owner still in the same town as he was in 1967 :D I'll have vintage pics and the story on my web site in a few days - I'll post a link when it's ready.
Joe, I am considering starting a '67 L78 registry since there is so little good information out there about '67 L78s. Luckily for me this worked in my favor this time graemlins/beers.gif
Jeff H Aug 20th, 03, 08:03 AM Sweet Mark, way to go. graemlins/beers.gif I'm surprised nobody has bid on it though.
Zedder Aug 20th, 03, 08:15 AM Thanks Jeff! I think the 4P thing concerned a lot of people at first - I know it concerned me too until I did a little research :D I called on the car 15 minutes after it was first listed and it took a few days to feel comfortable enough to arrange to have some one see it. Once I had made the committment, the owner of the car would not discuss the car or allow anyone else to view it until I gave him my decision. He said he had about 20 phone calls on the car since Saturday! He turned out to be a really decent guy and some one I am sure I'll stay in touch with. He also likes that fact that the car has found a good home graemlins/beers.gif
JOE58 Aug 20th, 03, 10:09 AM congrats and good luck with as it sounds like a good car. There is good and bad to owning a 67. It is difficult to find good info on them but on the other hand I bought a 1967 L78 distribitor for $5.00 at a swap meet. Less then 1% of cost of a 1969 L78 dist that everyone knows the 499 number for.
Jeff H Aug 20th, 03, 10:31 AM I love the basic look of that car. Nothing special other than the L78/4 spd.
Joe B Aug 20th, 03, 11:32 AM Congradulations on your purchase Mark!
Let us know when you are at one of the local
(Applewood?) cruise nights with it! I'll
be there. I always liked the look of
bucket seats, a 4 speed shifter with boot, and no console!!...neat stuff.
Zedder Aug 20th, 03, 05:33 PM Thanks guys! It really is a neat car with great history, the POP and I've spoken to every owner except the one that owned it from '71 - '72. It's had one repaint but the jambs and trunk lid are original paint and every original part has survived with the car except for the carb (which I think owner 3 might be able to get back for me) and the shifter which was replaced by the dealer before the car was sold to the first owner. Even the tach under the dash stayed with the car since new along with the receipt from the dealer!
