While I was D.A.ing the tail panel on a 68 a couple weeks ago, I noticed some numbers on the right side where it rolls under, just before the spot weld strip. They were about a quarter inch high and embossed outward. By the time I noticed them, the D.A. had knocked them down pretty good and, my eyeballs not being what they used to be, I couldn't make out what they were. Just wondering if anyone else has ever noticed these and are they another VIN location.

Have a set of numbers on the lower right side of my 68 RS also but they do not match my VIN or the partial VIN on the firewall. You are correct the numbers are stamped from the inner side of the panel. Got a feeling its just a part number to identify the RS tail panel.

Those are Fisher Body stamping plant "run numbers"; they were inserted in the dies and changed every week so they could look at a raw panel and tell when it was made and what plant made it. They're also on the quarters, rear window-to-trunk panel, deck lid, doors, and most other major panels rearward of the firewall. Chevy-stamped panels (hood, fenders, header, etc.) are not dated.
