I'm looking at purchasing what I believe to be a 396 - 375 HP '67 pace car. This is a long distance deal so I don't have all the info and have not personally verified the numbers. Here's what the owner has told me so far.

Trim Tag:

04A R
ST 67-12667 NOR106848 BODY
TR 732-Z C-1 PAINT
WD 2LGS 3SL
4K 5BY-

I am told the engine is coded T0308MQ and the car has an "aluminum" 4 speed.

Before I fly out to see it would like to know what you guys think. Owner thinks he might have the warranty booklet somewhere with "the metal plate" What's it potentially worth? Sounds like a #2-3+ car. Asking price is about $20K

The numbers posted are all reasonable, but
that is only a start. For a $20K car I'd
be going over everything.

Next step is the VIN, the cowl partial VIN,
the engine partial VIN, the transmission
partial VIN and assembly stamp, the
rear end codes (stamp and casting
date). The warranty book POP should match
all this.

Many of the Pacers are known, so if you
have one of these it might be able to be
verified.

Then, once verified, condition is everything,
as far as price goes.

An expert inspection might be warranted
to ensure that this isn't a well-done fake.

See if you can get the other info and post
it here, or at the CRG data site at
http://www.camaros.org/researchdata.shtml

(Why are 67 Pacers coming out of the
walls lately?)

Thanks guys. What are possible rear end codes for the 396-375 HP car? Were the M-20, 21, 22 all available with this engine? Any small things I could check that someone might have overlooked if this is a "built" car. The owner is in his late 60's he at least appears to have some integrity. I believe he's owned it for 20+ years. From what I can tell from the price guides, if everything checks out on the numbers this a VERY reasonable price.

M21 was the only trans available w/ L78 in 67.
Wide selection of rearend ratios. Could be any of over a dozen codes.

Please post the VIN when you get it. I'll make sure it fits the cowl tag.

Thanks.

I read on another site that 67 Pace Cars would have the fleet code number on the cowl tag, but the USCC info does not support this as only half of the cars registered showed a fleet number. Anyone know the story on the fleet numbers?? I don't think the one I'm looking at has any. I got the VIN and it matches the block and trans and is correct for the build date. Owner is still trying to locate the P-O-P. I'm going to hold off posting the VIN until I finalize things. Will probably fly out after the 1st.

I see you are from Georgia. For what it's worth, I sold a 67 375 Pace car at the Reno Hot August Nights auction 2 years ago. Real 375 car but had a later 325 hp engine in it. The guy that bought it was a older guy from Georgia, he was a dealer though. Probably not the same car but food for thought. If the car you are looking at is real you are getting a great deal. My wrong motor car sold for 21000.00.

Clill,

That's interesting. I haven't seen your old car surface yet. Was is Fraser Dante who bought the car? Do you remember if it had a fleet code on the cowl tag and was it a Norwood or a Van Nuys car? Also, was it on the USCC registry? They had about 100 '67 Pacers registered and only 5 were 375 HP cars. The one I am looking at is not one of those five. The current owner apparently bought it in northern CA 20+ years ago.
Thanks

67 Pacers have either a fleet code or a special stripe dash, or both. Actually, I have never seen a fleet code without the dash code, only the dash code without the fleet code.

Also, the dash code was used for any special stripe, so it was used by non-Pacers as well. So the dash code is considered necessary, but not sufficient, proof of being a Pacer.

70/RSZ.... The 67 Pace was a Norwood car,4K car. It was not Frazer Dante. Somewhere I have a copy of the Title but me and filing don't get along.I have a friend in Oregon with a 60,000 mile orig. paint 67 375 Pace also. He has owned it since 71, paid 2200.00 for it. It is one of the registered cars.

70RS Z28... The 375 hp 67 Pace that I used to own is now at a dealer in Houston. Wrong motor but real car. They just contacted me through my Camaro convert listed on Ebay. I think the last Vin #'s are 21419. The dealer is Corvettes and Classics, 281-875-1958.

Clill,

I talked to the Houston guys who have your former 67 L-78 pacer. They have done some detailing of the engine compartment and now want $35K+

They must be on Crack... I bet an offer in the 20's would buy it. This was an East Coast car though. It has that swollen seam syndrome. Where the rocker panels attach to the floor panels are swollen to about 3 times their size. A friend reminded me of that.

Swollen seam cars??? Is this due to rust in the joint, or maybe panel replacement. Guess I've lead a sheltered life, never heard the term.

Yes it is rust from the inside out. I think it's 3 layers of metal there and they are all spot welded together. They start rusting and swell up. We don't see it out West unless a East Coast car shows up. If you are working under the car and touch anything it rains rust in your face, makes for a fun time.

Sure Clill, rub it into us east coast guys! You west coast guys have it made. Not only are the cars in ten times better shape but there are also more of them over there. Trying to find a decent minimal rust original car here is awful. Seems to be more numbers matching cars over there also. I know all about the SSS (swollen seam syndrome) BTW, nice L78 conv. Seems you have had quite a collection over the years.

Thanks 68 SS, Yes I have a few and have had a few. When you are looking for a old car you should come to Ca for a Pomona swap meet, they are every 6 weeks. There are plenty of non swollen cars there. There are people that make a living bringing cars from Ca. It is worth a trip.
