According to camaros.org - http://camaros.org/trans.shtml - it's a 66-67 M20. Visit camaros.org for more info...

You can't tell what it is by the #'s on the side of the case. You will have to look for rings on the input shaft, drain plugs, and may have to pull the cover to be sure.
M-20 2 rings with one drain plug
M-21 1 ring with one drain plug
M-22 no rings with 2 drain plugs

You sure Doug? Try this other camaros.org link - http://camaros.org/trans.shtml#MuncieRatios . They claim right on that page that 3885010 is a '66-'67 M20, 2.52, 1.88, 1.46, 1.00. Just passing on the info as I see it.

Positive!. The # 3885010 is just the case #'s, and bear no real consideration to the actual ratio of the tranny. That case was used in the ' 66-67 model year's, the case # 3851325 was used in ' 64-65, the case #3925660 was used in ' 68-70, and for the '70 only M-22's, and all ' 71 up trannys the case # 3925661 was used. You have to look for rings on the input shaft, drain plugs, and pull the cover to be sure of what you have. You just have to look farther down the link you have posted, and you can see the same case was used in the M-21, and actually it was used in the M-22 also, which they have listed in the charts wrong.

Oooohhhhh. OK. They can't ever make it easy for you, can they? Can you imagine if they ever did stamp trannys, blocks, heads, etc. with their actual names? That'd probably cut the traffic on this site in half!

Houndog,
Take another look at the trans table. It shows both M20 and M21 usage for that casting #.
I see how you got misled, but you have to look at the table as a whole.

Any suggestions on how to clarify it in the table?

Nah, the table is good as is. Camaros.org has really good information. You just have to read the whole thing - a good lesson.

Due to parts being changed during rebuilds you can't depend on the numbers or rings to ID a Muncie. You need to remove the cover count the gear teeth on the input shaft. If it has 24 teeth or less its a M20, If it has 26 teeth and the teeth are on about a 45 deg angle its a M21. If it has 26 teeth and they are on about a 20 deg. angle you are the lucky owner of a M22.
